About Flexible Spending Accounts

A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is an employer-sponsored benefit that allows you to pay for certain non-covered medical expenses with pre-tax income for a plan year.

What can I pay for with an FSA?

You can use the money in your account to pay for qualified expenses as outlined in your plan document. Some examples of qualified expenses include: medical and dental deductibles and co-payments, eye exams, contact lenses and glasses, prescription drug co-payments and co-insurance, over-the-counter (OTC) products (physician’s prescription required), orthodontia or other dental care, physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, hearing aids, smoking cessation, and much more. Please note that items such as vitamins, toothpaste, soap, and shampoo are not eligible because they are cosmetic in nature.

How will I know if items are FSA-eligible?

How do I know how much money to contribute to my FSA?

Take a look at last year’s out-of-pocket medical expenses to get the best idea. Calculate the amount of recurring medical expenses to determine what your contribution amount should be.

How does my contribution pay for claims?

Your annual election will be divided among the number of paychecks you get for the year, and that amount will be deducted from your check PRIOR to being taxed. Traditionally, you would make a purchase for a medical expense and pay out of pocket, fill out a claim form, and submit that to your administrator along with the itemized receipt. Once the claim is approved, they would cut a check from your ELECTION balance and reimburse you.

How do I file manual claims and how often are manual claims reimbursed?

Completed manual claims with copies of the itemized receipts can be sent via email to flex@bmatpa.com, faxed to (210) 697-0360, or mailed to:

Manual claims are processed on a weekly basis. Completed claims will be processed within 7-10 business days. Checks are mailed on Fridays.


How do I know how much money is in my FSA account?

Cardholders can find out their current account balance online by logging in here. If you are unsure how to log into your account, contact BMA. Your account balance is available 24 hours a day and also provides information on transaction history and what to do if your card is lost or stolen.

How does the Debit MasterCard® factor in?

By participating in the FSA plan, your group may offer a Debit MasterCard®.  The debit card can be used right away for medical expenses. Simply pay for your medical expenses at the point of sale with your card. You will not be paying out-of-pocket; therefore you will no longer need to fill out manual claim forms and wait for reimbursement as described above in the traditional format!
